Nannies need to be better 08/24/2010
I discovered a blogspot called I saw your nanny. You can report bad babysitters/nannies to Isawyournanny@aol.com. Many people report and others frequent the site. My first thought was how heartbreaking but when I heard the people trying to get the parents to call/email them, I realized what a godsend this was. If you suspect your nanny or are unsure what goes on, tell your friends/neighbors about this site. Indifferent, rude, uncaring nannies beware, you will be busted much sooner than you think! Awhile back, I ran an ad in the National Enquirer for my psychic services. Bad idea. Every person in Georgia called with no access to a computer and didn't want to pay. I was ripped off five times that week by Georgians. Once by a woman in Pennsylvania who claimed she didn't have a credit card I could run. My customers pay by Paypal, credit card, check or cash. Everyone was casting spells and there was a lot of innappropriate feelings for people like crushes on married doctors or relationships with criminals and the woman wondering why the man wasn't behaving. I was baffled and shocked. Today this AM, my phone had received a phone call from North Carolina with no message of course. I called back and the man explained he wanted me to ok his wife's idea to have sex with her adopted son in his 30's. The wife put a closet in the son's room with her clothes. How ridiculous, what a naive way to excuse your bad behavior, I thought to myself as he told me this info. The man on the phone felt his marriage was strong and could take it. He thought it was a good idea. Any of my colleagues hearing this would warn me right away not to take the case and to advise against this! I did so. He seemed surprised I didnt want the case. I explained I could foresee bad consequences in the future for all three if this continued. I gently explained This is an example of social mores being different in states across America. Call your sister-Fight Adolescent Problems 08/05/2010
Have a sister? Then chances are you had it easier during teen years according to a recent study in the August issue of Journal of Family Psychology. Researchers found having a sister meant having a confidante, it protected against delinquency and depression. Having a brother isn't a bad thing, it just guarantee this type of intimacy, Padilla-Walker noted. Birth order and age between siblings didn't matter or make a difference statistically in this study. I have found this to be true in families in my clinical experience well. One of the questions I ask during the interview is how close are you to your brothers and sisters? Why? Was their normal rivalry or was there definite favoritism that caused divisions in the family. This is a fascinating and bothersome topic to me. I have been on both side, both the favored one and the hated one for no reason on my part, I should add. This is case with many of my clients as well who report who such unfair, cruel behavior I wonder why we don't test parents before releasing the children to them at the hospital at birth. On the supporting side of supportive family, having one buffers the hardest life experiences from disability to death of loved ones, to mental illness and physical disabilities. Truly having a caring family member period is a huge blessing. Everyone of my clients has commented at least once in session-"Who's going to care when I die or I fail? So and so", naming a sibling and 95% its a sister. So call your sister tonight or email and tell how much you appreciate her love in your life. Till next time, Dr Lily out. Western Diet linked to ADHD 08/01/2010
According to an Australian study, the Western diet is linked to higher incidence of ADHD. The researchers looked at the diets of 1,800 teens involved in an ongoing long-term health study. They classified the participants' diets into two categories, "Western" and "Healthy," with a "Healthy Diet" being one high in fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and fish. Wendy Oddy, one of the study authors, summarized the findings (via Science Daily): "We found a diet high in the Western pattern of foods was associated with more than double the risk of having an ADHD diagnosis compared with a diet low in the Western pattern, after adjusting for numerous other social and family influences ... having an ADHD diagnosis was associated with a diet high in takeaway foods, processed meats, red meat, high fat dairy products, and confectionery." The researcher believed the lack of Omega 3 fatty acid affected the brain negatively. Lastly the article asks poignantly, at what point, does the medical establishment and FDA ask themselves is diet, pesticides and food coloring -what are they and how they are working for us?
