Unicorn Cards by Doreen Virtue PhD 11/28/2009

Perfect for kids,
This deck is perfect for kids who want to play with oracle decks. Kids love unicorns. The images are appropriate and positive. The messages are easy to understand and common sense good parenting.
Ideas such as "Talk about your feelings, a happy surprise is on the way, brother and sisters (that your siblings are doing the best they can, please love them) were good ones.
I use this deck with children in my psychology private practice and they always walk away feeling like they got a good idea from the cards -that I or their parents may have been trying to reinforce. So the benefits are many. This deck was needed for children of deck lovers who want to explore.

Indigo Guidelines in Therapy 11/22/2009

This was submitted to an book being created for Indigos by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. I found about it at www.IndigoNetwork.com. I am a clinical psychologist who is an Indigo/Crystal and works with Indigo/Crystal children. I work in San Marcos in my own private practice and treat children as young as 3. In 2010, I will have been a Doctor for 13 years, have 16 years clinical experience and have 7 years experience with this population. I have found several techniques work with these children. I have success with these kids in psychotherapy and in my private life. I have an Indigo niece aged 5 at this point. 1. Yoga, meditation, tai chi, exercise calms them down, even short bursts to manage hyperactivity.
2. Art therapy, encouraging creativity any thing creative/independent project they start and manage. This helps manage painful feelings and helps them sort out how to proceed in a relationship.

3.Asking them how they would handle situations first and then educating them on how to improve on their responses to work, school, adults, authority figures.
4. Be yourself. Any fakeness/insincerity results in them dismissing you.

5.Be firm and direct but nice. Make it clear disrespect is not tolerated ever and they will respect that boundary.

6.Always listen to everything they say even if you think you have heard it before. Chances are, they are trying to formulate a better thought, feeling expression, or asking for help with an idea.
7. Be willing to be an accountable role model. In other words, if you talk the talk, walk the walk too. Everything I ask my clients to do, I do myself. The meditation, yoga, exercise, hobbies, mature perspective, nonjudgmental attitude is something I have to demonstrate in my office and in my life since I use myself as an example constantly so they know they have to take me seriously.
That actually has been why so many of them respect me and start doing what I ask since they see a powerful example in front of them. I hope this has been helpful.  My website is now www.Drlily2010.com.

A new standard in Therapy-Did You know this? 11/19/2009

This article was published in Psychiatric Times, Dec 2007, Vol 23 No 14. I love it and you will soon see why. By Steve Frankel Making Psychotherapy Work: Collaborating Effectively with your Patient is the book reviewed by Danny Wedding PhD, MPH.. Steve Frankel is a psychiatrist who practices psychoanalytic training.
Frankel uses many unconventional methods to support a model that challenges traditional practitioners. For example, He provides direct advice to patients, and accepting advice from them, extensive self disclosure on the part of therapist, accepting gifts, and giving them in return, arranging for contact with patients outside therapy through email, phone, fax or home visits.
This article and book crack me up. Among psychologists, there is a psychologist who has argued for more flexible boundaries, Dr. Ofer Zur in Santa Rosa, CA. So these guidelines are not new to me. In fact, I have done this for awhile and have found it to be useful and refreshing for my clients. Any time you get real with a client or level with them, they appreciate it.

Hypothyroidism in Psychiatric Annals, Nov 2009 11/17/2009

A recent psychiatric journal found a medical reason for psychosis in a 50 yr old women. They then read a a group of studies on hypothyroidism. Here are their findings. Hypothyroidism refers to a metabolic stat resulting from a deficiency in thyroid hormone dysfunction. Disturbances  can affect any organ. Thyroid problems have been associated with depression, mania, and psychosis. Hypothyroidism may serve as a risk factor for the development of the rapid cycling form of bipolar disorder. Thyroid dysfunction is occasionally found in patients with anxiety disorders, agoraphobia, social phobia, performance anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
Cognitive decline due to thyroid deficiency may represent dementia and has been characterized as one of the reversible causes of dementia. Authors of this study concluded there is a need for thyroid screenings among psychiatric patients.

Crystals and Coping with Negative Emotions 11/14/2009
1 Comment

I sincerely hope all the Indigos and Crystals out there are coping with negative emotions by exercise, yoga, tai chi, hobbies, sports, reading, music etc. Another untapped source of serenity is crystals. If you can, look around at gemfairs or sales at gem websites and purchase a stone that speaks to you. The bigger stones have more power. Place these in your home, office, car or carry them with you. I hope you feel the calming energy.
When I first dealt with them, I loved the calm, I felt. I noticed I needed more crystals, and larger ones, till one day my office/home seemed full and I no longer needed to buy anymore of these beautiful friends from Mother Earth. If you feel your crystal is out of energy, please energize them by saging, incense, prayer, meditation, placing them in sunlight briefly, running water, placing them in moonlight, placing in a bowl of salt. If your crystal seems to have given you its life, then bury it back in the ground. By giving back to the Earth, the universe will give you a new beautiful crystal!
