I met today with Debbie Axelrod, a woman who is training to be a special education teacher and has been a substitute teacher for 11 years. Also in this special meeting was Luna Donnelly MA, Oceanside school psychologist who was offering help and resources to create a new curriculum to keep students in school. I myself have been concerned and alarmed at the amount of children that come thru my doors that are thoroughly discouraged with the school system, the rigidity, the teacher's approach. I fear too many brains are going to be wasted and talents lost if we don't engage our children in a meaningful way in school. Too many adults tell me how they got "passed to the next grade" without having the adequate skills, knowledge for the higher grade level. Looking back, I realized I was frustrated with school but very determined to complete, go to college and graduate school in order to make my career goals. I wish our young children I see in my office had this but they don't. The children I see range from 3 yrs to 21, so the entire gamut is being addressed in this statement and this effort to reach them. This can apply to any child that does not fit our labeling system or "falls through the cracks", and/or Indigo/Crystal children. These sensitive children require a creative, flexible approach to learning and communicating what you want them to learn from a given task/educational lesson plan. Debbie was sharing her two professors from graduate school had books/curriculum and research to prove this "heart centered" or metaphysical approach was far more useful than people realize. When people use the word, love, heart centered or metaphysical - there is a tendency to believe that the approach or teacher is too soft or too "out there" to be effective. Debbie firmly believes its time to use this language because people need to know we are addressing our children in a loving, disciplined manner. I agree, the world has changed tremendously and one of them is that we have more compassion and more awareness. People openly acknowledge spirituality and its importance on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other networking sites where people seek and find work, and career connections. Here is San Diego, we have many minicultures. In Oceanside, the military has a strong presence and acceptance of these concepts is mixed. In Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach, this heart centered approach and metaphysical emphasis is welcomed and celebrated. What is common is the statement parents and teachers are frustrated and want to do something about it. We are doing something about it. We would like to create a school that has these goals: to meet national standards of education and excellence but uses alternative methods and approaches to meet those goals. In doing so, students will feel more connected to school, their peers, their learning and ultimately feel passionate about changing their life into one with advantages and dimensions rather than limitations and disadvantages. If a school cannot be created that is PUBLICLY funded, then we are creating/revising the current curriculum that can used in Waldorf/Montessori, private charter schools to maximize learning. Currently all three of us are researching sources of info, how to go about making such school and policy changes. This blog will keep you updated of our progress. If you want to help, fundraise or communicate this issue to your friends/family, we welcome your help. We are truly grateful as we know the greater good will be served and this change will come about. The journey to this goal is unclear but our vision of reaching children and showing them how loved, respected and wanted they are is very clear and I believe will move people to help bring about this change.
