I remember rotary phone and phone booths that took .25 cents to make a phone call. Remember those days? Well with technology, DVRS, cell phones and now smart phones, I have an issue with the effects of some of the technology on a psychological basis. Let me explain. Texting was useful to contact spouses or family during the work day with pertinent info. Now unfortunately I see some things that are disturbing. I now receive texts from clients' supposed family and friends making comments and questions about my clients. Why is this an issue? I can't guarantee that is the person claiming to be who it is and I never hear the voice. I meet many client's family and friends. By law I need a release of information (signed consent) to share clinical information. If you need to contact me do me the honor of calling me and telling me what is going on so I can make a judgement call as to whether or not you are who you say you are. If you do text and ignore my request, I will send a message saying call me. Be prepared for that.
Second comes dating, we have have such need for intimacy, I see many people driving their spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend up a wall by over texting and using that to substitute for normal day to day interactions such as a visit, date, walk or friends night over starting from Teens to adults. I recently had a client admit "My most intimate relationships are thru texting, and I never have met this person." I have issues with this: such as who are you talking to and how do you unless you skype and see the person inperson and hear the voice. Technology has made it easier to be a coward and never face those life defining moments such as doing a breakup face to face or telling difficult info to a friend face to face the manner in which it should be done. We have lost our personal touch, our warmth, compassion, grace to face the bad news all because AT&T now give us phones so we dont have to. Is that such a good idea? Am I the only one who objects to how our society is going?
Another problem is children texting other children at night when supposedly they are in bed. If I were a parent, I would remove the phone from my child, explaining there needs to be some family time so we are connected and the outside world has to wait. That is a healthier approach to parenting and boundaries than letting your child run wild and contact whomever without your consent. Agreed? I hope so.
I value the help technology and texting gives and the strides it has achieved in helping people feel connected and communicate but I think we have allowed the rules regarding this to be taken to an extreme. One which I dont agree with and wonder how this will affect our social lives.

Heart Centered Approach -Plan to Create a New Curriculum to Keep Students in School

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2011/08/heart-centered-approach-plan-to-create-a-new-curriculum-to-keep-students-in-school.html

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2011/08/heart-centered-approach-plan-to-create-a-new-curriculum-to-keep-students-in-school.html#comments

Uncategorized

I met today with Debbie Axelrod, a woman who is training to be a special education teacher and has been a substitute teacher for 11 years. Also in this special meeting was Luna Donnelly MA, Oceanside school psychologist who was offering help and resources to create a new curriculum to keep students in school. I myself have been concerned and alarmed at the amount of children that come thru my doors that are thoroughly discouraged with the school system, the rigidity, the teacher's approach. I fear too many brains are going to be wasted and talents lost if we don't engage our children in a meaningful way in school. Too many adults tell me how they got "passed to the next grade" without having the adequate skills, knowledge for the higher grade level.
Looking back, I realized I was frustrated with school but very determined to complete, go to college and graduate school in order to make my career goals. I wish our young children I see in my office had this but they don't. The children I see range from 3 yrs to 21, so the entire gamut is being addressed in this statement and this effort to reach them.
This can apply to any child that does not fit our labeling system or "falls through the cracks", and/or Indigo/Crystal children. These sensitive children require a creative, flexible approach to learning and communicating what you want them to learn from a given task/educational lesson plan.
Debbie was sharing her two professors from graduate school had books/curriculum and research to prove this "heart centered" or metaphysical approach was far more useful than people realize. When people use the word, love, heart centered or metaphysical - there is a tendency to believe that the approach or teacher is too soft or too "out there" to be effective. Debbie firmly believes its time to use this language because people need to know we are addressing our children in a loving, disciplined manner. I agree, the world has changed tremendously and one of them is that we have more compassion and more awareness. People openly acknowledge spirituality and its importance on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other networking sites where people seek and find work, and career connections.
Here is San Diego, we have many minicultures. In Oceanside, the military has a strong presence and acceptance of these concepts is mixed. In Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach, this heart centered approach and metaphysical emphasis is welcomed and celebrated. What is common is the statement parents and teachers are frustrated and want to do something about it.
We are doing something about it. We would like to create a school that has these goals: to meet national standards of education and excellence but uses alternative methods and approaches to meet those goals. In doing so, students will feel more connected to school, their peers, their learning and ultimately feel passionate about changing their life into one with advantages and dimensions rather than limitations and disadvantages.
If a school cannot be created that is PUBLICLY funded, then we are creating/revising the current curriculum that can used in Waldorf/Montessori, private charter schools to maximize learning. Currently all three of us are researching sources of info, how to go about making such school and policy changes. This blog will keep you updated of our progress. If you want to help, fundraise or communicate this issue to your friends/family, we welcome your help. We are truly grateful as we know the greater good will be served and this change will come about. The journey to this goal is unclear but our vision of reaching children and showing them how loved, respected and wanted they are is very clear and I believe will move people to help bring about this change. Thank you.

Bob's Burgers, Autism Enters Mainstream TV family land

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2011/02/bobs-burgers-autism-enters-mainstream-tv-family-land.html

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2011/02/bobs-burgers-autism-enters-mainstream-tv-family-land.html#comments

Uncategorized

In your life there is your real life and your TV life. (The tv shows you watch to escape your life).
In the new hit show, Bob's burgers on Fox on Sunday 8:30pm, this show features a restaurant owner and his family. Bob, has two daughters and one son. The oldest daughter is portrayed as autistic and as far as I can tell -the portrayal is accurate for someone who is mildly affected with this condition. I congratulate them as the show is hysterically funny, the voices alone are done realistically and you feel as if this family exists and their personalities are loving and humorous. I also applaud portraying this limiting condition in a humane kind, real way in a popular format in a time when many would be exposed to the setup by the writers of the show. Now many in America can say well "Tina has Autism so yes its common". Autism is shocking common and the cure for this condition seems to lie in the diet and genes of the afflicted. I have heard numerous cases where diet caused a turn around, almost cure for this huge problem. Science has increased efforts to study Autism so they can pinpoint what is causing this and how we can work with it, and possibly prevent it.
Lastly I have to mention Gene and Louise the two other children with vivid imagination and seemingly no help to their father- these kids couldn't be done any more realistically. I feel like I know these children and have seen kids just like this in my office. In real life, these kids could use some discipline but as in real life Bob gets exhausted by their outrageous ideas and behavior and asks them to leave him be. I have seen that as well. My point being, see this show and have a good laugh and realize now our illnesses are so prevalent TV writers decided to add them into our tv life so we can feel at home. This is a good and bad idea. Good because tv is reflecting our reality. So Autism has reached a level of acceptance in our world to be added into tv dramas. Bad because we can't escape into cartoon land as easily since our real life problems followed us there. Hmmmm. Would love to hear your thoughts. Till next time.

Mandala Art

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2010/12/mandala-art.html

http://www.drlily2010.com/1/post/2010/12/mandala-art.html#comments

Uncategorized

Love this stuff! This weekend I purchased a mini Charlie Brown and Christmas poseable tree. Why? Sure I have young children in the practice. Other reasons were compelling as well: Charlie Brown and that special have come to symbolize how love, acceptance, gratitude and Christmas spirit is precious not just material presents or an overdressed expensive looking tree. The lesson and message has stuck with me over the years and every year I remember it well and realize that is what I love so much during the holiday season and why Charlie Brown is so precious to me. People around me who value family values and traditions seem to enjoy the season more than the people competing for the best and most gifts. The parallel is those who have their head on straight and are grateful are often happier, do well in relationships and express and receive love from those around them. Ask yourself am I one of them all the time? If not, you can be, just be grateful for everything around you at all times. I am grateful for many things. The list is too long to mention here, my clients, my friends, familiy, my gifts, blessings and ability to help
I love the decorations and endless ways cuteness has found form, in scarecrows, figures, pumpkins, angels, Santa Claus, reindeer and more. Charlie B reminds us to look deeper, to feel, to rejoice and celebrate love and joy and the people around him. Linus is always there to remind us there is spirituality in every day in that movie. Sally reminds us that when the big picture escapes you, you do remember to enjoy the season for the surrounding decorations and ambiance.
Now you understand why Charlie Brown will be on my desk today! Incidentally there was a Linus and Sally doll, if I could I would buy it all and arrange it accordingly in the waiting room. :) Enjoy your holiday season and I know you will be grateful like I am for the food, company, warm home and job you have! All the possessions you have whether material (car, clothes, etc)or immaterial like a good sense of humor is a gift from Source, God and all that is. I am thankful for God and all of you. Some keynote speakers have written wonderful books on Buddism and how to use with clients. I jumped at the chance since I was raised Hindu and use meditation techniques with my clients. What I found is I am less theoretical but my approach clearly works as my clients feel better, have improved memory, concentration, intuition as a result of my guidance. Hinduism is one of the three major religions that predate Christianity. Buddha was actually an Indian prince raised Hindu who never left the Boddhi tree until he reached enlightenment since he was upset at the nature of the world. Therefore, I argue I use compassion, nonjudgement, and a rather "big picture " approach with my clients before I ever took any Buddism courses in any format, psychology or spiritual. Another concept not discussed but quite useful for many of my clients is maya, delusion. Maya is the perception that you know things, but in reality, there may be more that lies underneath the surface. Therefore there is a layer of delusion we live with and accept as being on Earth. If you can take a step back, see the world and your life as a play, and you are playing a part. God in this view, is asking you to play your part well and keep in mind you have played other parts in other lives.
While discussing this with a colleague, she pointed out something. My Muslim colleague was quick to point out to me, well you are assuming everyone believes in past lives and Jewish, and Muslims don't. I nodded but what she failed to realize was that at this point in my life, due to the Law of attraction, I had attracted every person who needed psychological help and thought like I did.
My clients tend to be openminded, tolerant, have a universal outlook regarding God and our place in the world and seem to be humanitarian.
What are they doing in therapy you ask? Well they still have death, divorce, self esteem issues, abuse, trauma, need social skills training, relationship training, and need a safe place to let the mask down and their reality face up looking at them. Then they come to me. They want a doctor who is psychic because they are, someone who is accepting of spirits and reincarnation since they are. My clients espouse every possible faith you could imagine and yet I tell you there are these broad similarities. Even my cleints who adamantly tell me they feel disappointed in God, I am quick to point out, they believe but they have lost faith and are hoping to regain it. If this true, I tell them, you will stay, if not, you won't. True to form, this is what happens. Many regain faith in the Universe after healing themselves and making peace with various issues. Anyone who finds what I am saying objectionable simply leaves, I can recognize them at this point. I am glad as I have the easiest job in the world, to give hope to people who think like me so they have given life a chance as flexibility is key to healing.
