A recent psychiatric journal found a medical reason for psychosis in a 50 yr old women. They then read a a group of studies on hypothyroidism. Here are their findings. Hypothyroidism refers to a metabolic stat resulting from a deficiency in thyroid hormone dysfunction. Disturbances can affect any organ. Thyroid problems have been associated with depression, mania, and psychosis. Hypothyroidism may serve as a risk factor for the development of the rapid cycling form of bipolar disorder. Thyroid dysfunction is occasionally found in patients with anxiety disorders, agoraphobia, social phobia, performance anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Cognitive decline due to thyroid deficiency may represent dementia and has been characterized as one of the reversible causes of dementia. Authors of this study concluded there is a need for thyroid screenings among psychiatric patients.

wow thats an amazing finding. I am glad to see it is reversible though. It seems thyroid dysfunction can affect a wide range of patients, screening should definitely be put in place. I will pass this information onto my friend, thanks.
